The history of American whiskey
Despite this, that the homeland of whiskey is the British Isles - and most of all Scotland and Ireland - but this drink is very often associated with the United States. This opinion is so widely accepted, that somebody, one who has no more knowledge about it may even think, that the USA is the home of this famous alcohol. On the one hand, this is obviously not true, but on the other hand, it is quite difficult to be surprised by this opinion - after all, whiskey is now extremely popular in the United States, and in this country so many different varieties and brands have arisen, that it is now one of its leading producers. So if someone really wants to know whiskey well, it can never ignore its American varieties.
The appearance of whiskey in the United States was a rather natural course of events - after all, the country was created thanks to numerous immigrants coming mainly from countries takich jak Szkocja czy Irlandia, którzy praktycznie od razu przywieźli ze sobą zarówno miłość do tego trunku jak i wiele tajemnic związanych z jego wytwarzaniem – cały proces produkcji od przygotowania zacieru poprzez fermentację na specjalnych drożdżach gorzelniczych i na destylacji alkoholowej kończąc. It is worth noting, however, that the natural conditions on the American continent differ quite significantly from those on the British Isles, which is associated with difficulties in accessing certain types of cereals, necessary for the production of whiskey. It did, however, that in the United States many completely new varieties of this drink and the methods of its production emerged very quickly, so now whiskey from this country is very distinctive and significantly different from its older sisters from Scotland or Ireland. The prohibition period was a kind of crisis for American whiskey, which was introduced in the USA shortly after the end of World War I and lasted up to a year 1933. Throughout this period, both the whiskey itself and all other strong alcohols were illegal throughout the country, thus the production of this drink itself has significantly decreased, and true, markowa whisky została zastąpiona przez nielegalne alkohole destylowane w domowych warunkach, which inevitably had to be of much worse quality.
The production process of some American whiskeys can be very complex, which shows perfectly, z jak ogromną dbałością o wszystkie szczegóły podchodzi się tutaj do tego trunku – w niektórych przypadkach ogromne znaczenie mają nawet takie rzeczy jak odpowiednie drożdże gorzelnicze czy beczki, in which the drink is to mature. The famous Bourbon is a great example here, originating from the state of Kentucky and still produced today only there. There is a whole range of legal regulations that this drink must meet in order to be considered a real Bourbon and sold under this name.. An interesting fact is, że przy jego produkcji bardzo często wykorzystywane są drożdże gorzelniane które były już użyte do produkcji poprzedniej partii trunku, which is also very important to get the right flavor.
We can safely say, that American whiskey is absolutely equal to that of the British Isles. Of course, the two types of drink are very different from each other and it is sometimes difficult to compare them, but they are certainly just as interesting, and absolutely every true connoisseur should know them. Anyway, many of these top whiskey producers, such as Jack Daniel`s or Jim Bean come from the United States, so each of us can easily find out for ourselves, why they are so appreciated.
